Sarah Atlas is a search-and-rescue dog handler, one of many civilian volunteers who serve with New Jersey Task Force 1. They were to be deployed to Ground Zero with 200 other members of New Jersey Task Force 1, including structural engineers and medical workers, as well as other search-and-rescue people.

Instead I called my friend Cathy at the famous Raptor Trust in New Jersey, where they have a fully equipped hospital and full-time veterinary technicians on staff. A group of us gathered to release her near the spot where she was found. She was rescued, put back into her crate, and returned to the Raptor Trust.

The group is called WING-IT (Wildlife In Need Group In Tulsa) and is now part of Tulsa Audubon , a mutually beneficial partnership which furthers the goals of both. John grew up near the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey, is a gifted photographer , and has an easterner’s view of snowfall.
