Over $100 million went to medical research while about $1 million went to animal welfare causes. Actually, less than $1 million dollars went to animal welfare because a portion went to guide dog associations and that is human welfare as far as I’m concerned.) It’s more money for medical research.

I don't support animal research and I have no sympathy for animal researchers. I don't believe they are working for human welfare. I almost quit a book club a year ago because one of the members is a proponent of medical research. I had to stay in that group because she must be challenged.

I had never heard of the use of ferrets in medical research though. A national physicians group has filed a federal complaint against the University of Washington, saying its use of ferrets to train medical residents in emergency procedures on babies and children violates a federal animal-welfare law. News to me.

For Engber, who dispassionately describes procedures most of the time, the "advances" in the medical care of humans are all well worth what he and other vivisectionists do to dogs and other sentient nonhumans. But there is a significant contingent who is not as enamored with the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act as he is. Maybe on paper.
