At least one birder will now likely grab his war hammer and check flight availabilities from New York to Frankfurt as well as average prison sentences in Germany for first degree murder. Black Woodpecker: Officially a Nemesis

Sure, occasionally a bird has given me problems, like Black-backed Woodpeckers back in 2007 when I was doing an alleged Big Year in New York State, but not seeing a bird for a single year does not make it a nemesis. But Black Woodpecker ? Yet, here I am, back from Austria, minus one Black Woodpecker sighting.

Sure, I didn’t like it in 2007 when I was doing a (not very) big year in New York and Black-backed Woodpecker would not cooperate for me. Just in New York State I have seen eight different Whimbrel. This is an American Dipper by Redgannet, who probably wonders what the big deal is.

A text message that let me know about a mega-rarity in New York ! New York State’s first Grace’s Warbler. March was very slow so I took the time to enjoy the common birds , especially woodpeckers and turkeys. I was pleased to add a new woodpecker to my Queens list too. Indigo Bunting.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of March 2011)

They are not so incredibly rare in Germany anymore but this was the first I’ve seen around Heidelberg and the first anywhere since 2009. If it doesn’t count: Crested Tits popping up all over my neighbourhood, south of Heidelberg, Germany. Kirby Adams Mar 21st, 2011 at 10:03 am Mine was several flocks of Cedar Waxwings.
