Four months ago, I would have taken to the crowded pathway at Lafayette Heritage Trail Park like a horse to pasture, reveling in the outdoor exercise and rare time away from my new baby. Only 20 or so miles south of Georgia, we had experienced about 500 cases, our uptick slow, steady, and manageable.

Kathryn Dudeck, of the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Georgia, has awful stories of people who have tried to remove birds from sticky traps. The Barn Swallow at right was rescued by Rebecca Dmytryk of Wildlife Emergency Services in Moss Landing, California, and transferred to Native Songbird Care and Conservation in Sebastopol.

In 2007 – at age 50 – I realized that the answer was right in front of me. She has a degree in animal behavior from the University of Georgia. Her animal training experience includes working with dogs, cats, horses, llamas, alpacas and camels.
