One of my most memorable outings was a night-time game drive in Kenya when we saw an aardvark and a zorilla, so we ticked off both the first mammal in the field guide’s index, and the last. I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting.

Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. That’s what you do with other game, right? More states will doubtless join the queue of those proposing hunts.
