I've always thought of horse-drawn carriages the way I think about greyhound racing or fur: Most people are against them, so why are they still around? I'm not sure why he thinks we "appear" to be effective, as I can't think of one campaign that I've supported, other than the banning of greyhound racing in individual states, that has actually succeeded. As long as humans have anything to gain from using sentient nonhumans, in other words, the latter will always lose.

Middle class adoption of dog ownership required affordable collars, just like today’s mass marketed collar industry. These collars are particularly useful on greyhounds and other dogs with a small head and large neck. Dogs owned by royalty or other elites tended to be ornate and decorative.
