Not far behind is California (348, up from 297), followed by Arizona (294, up from 155), Florida (233, up from 227), New Jersey (223, up from 199), Oregon (221, up from 209), and Texas (218, up from 106). Some are all three ( e.g. , New York, California, and Florida). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species.

The states which have essentially banned leghold traps are Florida, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, California, and Washington. The trapper, who was not a local, ended up in court, had to pay a fine, and (we were eventually told) was not planning to trap in the area in the future.

West Virginia ranks 44th, Hawaii ranks 45th, and Rhode Island ranks 48th. However, that’s not the case for others, such as Connecticut or Rhode Island.)
