And yet, that is the very bird Rhode Islanders chose for their state bird: the Rhode Island Red Hen ! In the 1950’s, there was a special election sponsored by the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs, the Providence Journal Company, and the Audubon Society of Rhode Island.

The states which have essentially banned leghold traps are Florida, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, California, and Washington. The trapper, who was not a local, ended up in court, had to pay a fine, and (we were eventually told) was not planning to trap in the area in the future.
