Some are all three ( e.g. , New York, California, and Florida). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species.

It was a warm afternoon on the Florida Panhandle, and my husband and I were exploring the recreation areas of Eglin Air Force Base, which is the size of Rhode Island. I liked seeing the management – it meant the habitat resembled the fire-dependent forests that once covered this region of Florida.

The states which have essentially banned leghold traps are Florida, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, California, and Washington. The trapper, who was not a local, ended up in court, had to pay a fine, and (we were eventually told) was not planning to trap in the area in the future.

West Virginia ranks 44th, Hawaii ranks 45th, and Rhode Island ranks 48th. However, that’s not the case for others, such as Connecticut or Rhode Island.)
