The Black Heron – besides looking rather cool, though not really very black – also has an interesting fishing technique. T his is an African Sacred Ibis at Ndumo.

It was founded as a safe place for refugees from the Mozambique Civil War , which ran from 1977 to 1992. It is a good place for South African birders, as several species are found here and nowhere else in South Africa, and it holds a small number of endemics that it shares with the Mozambique lowlands.

Pale-mandibled Aracari by Luke Seitz Taste, touch and smell in birds are generally considered to be weaker than these same senses in mammals. Most appear to have a very limited sense of smell and mammals appear to have better developed olfactory glands. Sword-billed Hummingbird , Colombia Bills come in all shapes and sizes.

Similarly, the property protects an impressive large mammal fauna; it contains globally significant populations of African elephant (Loxodontha africana) (106,300), black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) (2,135) and wild hunting dog (Lycaon pictus). With no permanent habitation inside its boundaries, human disturbance is low.
