Elephants used to cross the border here before the war, but the fighting increased incidents of poaching as law and order broke down, leading to highly traumatised elephants crossing the border. But twice during my two week stay we did see the pack, and it was my first ever encounter with the species. But despite this, I did see birds.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. Apparently in the past some birders and photographers had been not so polite in their behavior when a Northern Hawk Owl had been in the vicinity, and when this bird showed up the local law enforcement did not want it made public.
