Every single species, even the European Starlings above, count as one bird on the year’s checklist. Then, amazingly, it flopped down in the leaf litter right in front of me where it alternated sunbathing and flipping leaves. On January first my year list, just like every other birder’s year list, reverted to zero.

If you just go for business and stay in the city than you will be very likely returning home with a limited list – mainly featuring Feral Pigeon (shown in its natural habitat in the award-winning picture below). My Kenya list of 69 species consists entirely of birds I saw during business trips to Nairobi.

Case in point: some of my family members have become active with feral cat colony organizations. On the one hand, it’s better than doing nothing with a feral cat colony. But I don’t agree with the supplemental feeding that happens with feral cats–if you’re gonna call them wildlife, treat them as such.
