It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. Speaking of stunning, one of my best bird memories will always be the moment when I spotted a bright male Blackburnian Warbler glowing in the trees above a small pond on my parents’ farm, and another is my first childhood American Redstart flitting out to hawk insects above a stream.

Traditional farming landscape of small holdings, hedges and groves draped in snow… I actually hate snow, but on days like this, cannot resist it. Here in Serbia, in the south of the continent, this species is a proper rarity. The first idea was, it is probably wounded by poachers. The startled bird was looking at us.

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. The dog tracks did not lead to any birds, but the wounded snake had a Brahminy Kite on it until I came along on my bike and took a photo. I hope you enjoy these photos!

Security is taken very seriously in the aviation business and discretion is better than having to explain yourself to tightly wound security personnel. Many of the common species can be seen here, probably in this order; White-eared Bulbul , Red-vented Bulbul , Eurasian Hoopoe , Purple Sunbird , Graceful Prinia , Indian Roller.
