There’s also a much greater variety of species of deer living here now than than there were four or five hundred years ago, for along with our native Roe and Red Deer we also have large populations of Fallow, Sika, Reeves’s Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer. Reeves’s Muntjac , a highly successful invasive species in the UK.

Checking my annual list, I am where I usually am at this time of year: several species short of 200. Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. Now, one species, that I should find. 2018 is about to end. The Slavonian Grebe is also a lifer for me.

eBird doesn’t offer such an option, so I used the second best: the species was observed in one month only. What qualifies a bird to be included in the top-5? My first criterion was that I observed it only once during the year 2018. This version extended the list a bit and it turned out that almost every fourth bird was an one-monther.

In short, the accepted view used to be that a small breeding population of Egyptian Vultures inhabited Southern Africa, but has vanished facing the spread of towns, roads and farms. During my lifetime, this species was rare in my native Serbia, too. The work is expected to take two months, after which the killer line will be removed.

During my previous five trips to Indonesia, I only heard but never caught a glimpse of three species. Now my tally stands at four species seen and a fifth heard-only. Buttonwood Farms was nearby and didn’t require an appointment. Now, the real challenge is this: not only did I see a pitta, I saw several! A country-first?
