Africa’s Big Five and Little Five

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

Birding the Kruger Park (2): Bateleur area

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.

One study found that birds living in Botswana had elevated levels of lead in their bloodstreams during hunting season, presumably coming from lead bullets used on animals killed by hunters. So, you would have a “Hippopotamus Egret”, a “Rhinoceros Egret” or an “Elephant Bird” ( source ).

Shadows of Africa

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Their presence indicates large mammals nearby – and only a few meters away, one Southern White Rhinoceros mother with a calf disappears among the bushes. The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus.
