Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. The homeowner, Fred Jordan, has been hosting visiting birders who heard of the bird through word-of-mouth since November. Why is that awesome? Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird.

Taxonomically, swallows are one of the few families of birds that has seen little change in its ranks. For centuries, it seems that ornithologists and naturalists have correctly pegged swallows to the right family. The family is global in its distribution, with 83 species of around 19 genera. Barn Swallow , Hirundo rustica.

This totally crazy bird is the crème de la crème of the cracid family, and besides being endangered (population estimated at under 2,500), its habitat choice of cloudforests on the steep slopes of a few volcanoes and mountains in southern Mexico and south-western Guatemala makes it a tough bird to seek. What better way to start a birding day?

Hes only been birding since 2005 but has garnered a respectable life list by birding whenever he wasnt working as a union representative or spending time with his family.
