We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family.

We tried to sight and count the pack twice every day so that if any of the dogs got snared we’d know quickly and could get a vet in to dart them, free them and clean up the wound. Like other social animals, his family connections were keeping him alive, as his family was feeding him. We had to leave Fala to find the pack.

We birders don’t always like to ruminate on missed birds, for some of us the wounds are worn too close to the surface. The hunt was on in earnest. This one was not an individual you’d mistake for a pure bird by any means, as it mostly resembled the Black-chinned side of the family in size and structure.
