Peregrine Falcon ( Falco peregrinus ) at Delevan NWR (click on photos for full sized images). I’m sure most of you know that the Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, especially DDT, during the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s. Love those talons!

Located right where the Yangtze River enters the sea (and dividing it into two parts), it is mostly flat farmland. P eregrine Falcon. Northern Lapwings are difficult to get right on a photo, as their metallic greenish sheen often comes over as just undifferentiated black. Eurasian Kestrel.

This morning, they have seen some 10,000 Broad-winged Hawks , mixed up with two dozen Swainson’s Hawks , several Mississippi Kites and one or two King Vultures , Swallow-tailed and Double-toothed Kites , Merlins and Peregrine Falcons. Or a mammal. Or even those pooie reptiles.

Birds came fast during the first few hours, including a wide array of classic Neotropical species such as Keel-billed Toucan , Bat Falcon , Bright-rumped Attila , Buff-throated Saltator , and Boat-billed Flycatcher. the species suffering most from deforestation).

Moorcroft Manor isn’t just a lovely place to stay, its a great birding location in its own right. Above the gardens a wheedling just fledged Gymnogene begged fro food from its long suffering parent. To the west a large piece f irrigation machinery served as a perch for a large flock of Amur Falcons.
