Threatened Birds of Nanhui, Shanghai

A former World Wildlife reserve in Nanhui was simply turned into agricultural land. Other areas in Lingang are starting to be covered with factories (Tesla) and residential buildings. After all, China`s President Xi Jinping recently stated that “We must protect this planet like our own eyes”. So, there is some hope.

Reed Parrotbill – an unofficial city bird of Shanghai

In 2016, the Shanghai Wildlife Protection Management Station started the search for one, though progress has been slow. This has also made the Reed Parrotbill the symbol of a local initiative to protect the wetlands of Nanhui. I would like to introduce two candidates, a bulbul and a parrotbill.

Regular readers of this site might be able to think of a much discussed example, that of birding on National Wildlife Refuges versus hunting. The other tricky area of use it or lose it is how you use it.

The 701 Long-eared Owl of Kikinda

You may have read about them in the Wall Street Journal , the BBC Wildlife Magazine , or perhaps watched them on BBC, who filmed them here twice, for the Planet Earth II in 2015 and for the One Planet in 2018. Rightfully, this town centre doubles as a nature reserve – an officially protected owl habitat.
