As Iowa’s Governor, Tom Vilsack took steps to protect animals, including vetoing a bill that allowed dove hunting.

The first most readers have probably been aware of, the cheerleader hunter who has been in the news for, well, hunting game animals and being attractive and blonde. People, they argue, are more important than bugs, and besides, the money will help pay to protect other conservation land. Unsustainable hunting leads to extinction.

And it does not even live in reeds. Sadly, the numbers of Falcated Duck are similarly declining – it is thus listed as Near Threatened.

To the Editor: Re “ Suddenly, the Hunt Is On for Cage-Free Eggs ” (front page, Aug. 12): While this is a step in the right direction toward reducing the animal abuse inherent in all factory farming (from the chicken’s point of view), it’s still a long way from what nature intended.
