The general mood was one of gratitude, and everyone passed camera lenses and binoculars back and forth to share the experience. After the holidays I left Maine, returning to my home in Northwest Florida. There is a small wound on the lower beak, which is not significant, but will be cleaned and treated.

Lost on the Space Coast

It’s only a small surprise that a significant proportion of those sites are in Florida. The jewel in Florida’s bedazzled crown may be Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, on the Atlantic Coast in the shadow of Cape Canaveral. As I slowly wound around the first few pull-offs I found little of note.

We assembled at nine in the morning in a small parking lot outside the naval base in Key West, Florida. The weeks leading up to spring break had been a whirlwind, and the days before the trip mostly spent driving and exploring Florida. When I say “cut,” I mean paper-cut sized wounds here. That was mostly my fault.
