I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. Honest food in a fifties’ diner while reminiscing about all those movies you have seen about diners in the fifties. I flew into Denver from Mexico.

Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. We met Marilyn and Leonardo at a non-descript fast-food joint’s parking lot and within 10 minutes we were in Parque Nacional La Estanzuela. It was amazing.

Many of the common species can be seen here, probably in this order; White-eared Bulbul , Red-vented Bulbul , Eurasian Hoopoe , Purple Sunbird , Graceful Prinia , Indian Roller. My personal list for Safa Park runs to 40+, but upwards of 200 species have been recorded here over the years. Gates are open from 08.00am ’til 10.00pm.
