In Costa Rica, although I did spend a memorable one years ago in the Osa Peninsula where flocks of parrots flew into the mangroves while we feasted on turkey, pie, and the works, we have no actual Wild Turkeys , nor an official Thanksgiving. In Costa Rica, it’s pretty common and easy to see in and near just about any protected forest.

There are more than 50 regional endemics to choose from, and many birds are easier to see in Costa Rica than many other places because of access to habitat and/or lack of hunting pressure. Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Yellow-naped Parrot.

Recent publicity about these remarkable tribes has resulted in tourists wanting to experience this wild land and its attractions for themselves. They are traditionally pastoral people, but have from necessity accepted agriculture, fishing and crocodile hunting as means of survival.

Sadly the great gannet colonies during the July to October period to protect the birds, but if you head up to Boundary Stream you’ll find a good mix of lowland and mountain forest where active management is keeping forest birds going. The centre has a daily feeding of wild Kaka , making it easy to see this large parrot.

In addition to habitat loss, extreme weather, invasive species, hunting, and the illegal capture of birds for pet markets are major contributing factors. Descriptions are similarly compressed–no icons or silhouettes or physical descriptions. I did learn that not every bird with “Cuban” in the name is a Cuban endemic.
