In August, we took a family trip to beautiful San Diego, seeing SeaWorld , LegoLand , and the San Diego Zoo. Additionally, there are still a few regularly-occurring Pacific pelagic species that I have never seen. Or, because it is San Diego, getting away from the sun.

Kooyman (co-author with Jim Mastro) spent decades studying Emperor Penguins and can be considered the world’s foremost expert on the species. Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips.

For, in birder lingo, a split occurs when subspecies are determined to be, in fact, entirely separate species. If you happen to have seen both species, your life list can increase without you even leaving the house. Two former species can also be joined into one, the same way. This Bullock’s Oriole migrated from up north.

This is Tom’s second contribution to 10,000 Birds, following the riveting description of his great hummingbird nest heist : The Gray Thrasher , one of the endemic species of the “The Baja,” has become one of my favorite birds to photograph. It was spotted by several birders at the Famosa Slough, on August 2nd of 2015.

Where the skilled spotter finds needles in haystacks and picks out rarities from more plentiful species. This month I was in San Diego, helping out with and participating in the American Birding Association’s San Diego rally. It was nice to get such long, satisfying looks.

It’s my first return to Prospect Park since my overwhelming San Diego adventure and things seem quiet, despite favorable overnight winds and gushing reports of a wild sparrow bonanza the previous day. Could I ever readjust to land? Could I go home again?
