Infected rats, for example, no longer shun cat urine but find it an aphrodiasic. The traditional, supposedly humane answer to the glut of feral cats has been institution of “TNR” programs – trap, neuter, return. And keeping cats, natural hunters, indoors is, as a matter of biology and of common sense, not the healthiest state for them.

A feral kitten captured and neutered by a small non-profit, somewhat militant organization, was on display at our local Massachusetts Society Prevention of Cruelty Association branch, which often took these feral cats in the hope of finding homes for them. A second rescue kitty, Hartley Mims, Jr. Sasha learned to purr.

By way of an example take the Western Gulls that I studied on the Farallon Islands in California. One of the first examples I ever encountered was in the books of Gerald Durrell, the famous conservationist who was an early pioneer of the roles of zoos in conservation. This is a very serious business here in New Zealand.
