Pigeons have tiny compasses in their heads

Homing pigeons were apparently able to find their way home after being transported in a closed box a long distance away (many hundreds of miles in some cases). In any event, they were surprisingly good at this. The same researcher then did the same thing but with big magnets strapped to the children’s heads.
