Coincidentally, last night was a board meeting for our homeowner's association, and though I wasn't on the agenda there's always time for homeowner comments about, say, the petting zoo and pony rides that are scheduled for the spring "BBQ" ( here 's part one of this story). As for the creation of the picnic, there was no event committee.

But Friday, 6 December, was the first day of the African Birding Expo and we knew that sleeping in wasn’t an option because the afternoon would be spent doing expo events and we wanted to get some time to go birding. Rare birds are weird, and a bird as rare as a first country record is a special experience.

With only two islands the population was vulnerable to one-off events, so some birds were taken into captivity with the intention of creating new populations in other secure locations. As I mentioned last week I enjoyed the little guys a great deal more than twitching the penguin (does that sound wrong?).

I imagine the female bosses the male around, but maybe I am anthropomorphizing there based on my experience in recently working on an apartment with my wife. Given the recent global developments and events, I understand the bird very well. Taking photos of such a rare species is a bit of a double-edged sword.
