As in the first edition, the images are usually of female birds (or, as Sibley calls them, “drab females”) or birds in nonbreeding plumage, a decision I never really understood until today, when I read the Key to the Group Accounts on the inside cover of the second edition: “these present the greatest identification challenge.”

The argument from brutalization, however, does not appear to postulate a logical connection between vegetarianism and inhumanity but rather a psychological one. Thus the strong form of the argument seems to assume the truth of the following psychological generalization. Perhaps the argument from brutalization presupposes 2.

There is no philosophical continuum, but there is a psychological continuum, as evidenced by everyone at the workshop taking steps back or forward, denoting their increase in animal use (including no meat to meat, or backsliding, like I did a decade ago), or their decrease (such as when vegetarians go vegan). How about this?

It is highly unlikely, given the present policy of the United States government, that surplus grain, even if it were available, would be shipped to the most needy people. How can we understand Lappé’s recommendation of a meatless diet as a “first step” toward changing the present situation? KBJ: I’m speechless.
