Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced as part of Great Outdoors Month the agency is proposing to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. National wildlife refuges provide premier outdoor recreational opportunities across the Nation.

I’m sure most of you know that the Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species because of the use of organochlorine pesticides, especially DDT, during the 1950′s, 60′s, and 70′s. Forest Service plan to allow 30,000 acres of logging in the burned area will cause significant harm to wildlife, water and the regrowing forest. I’ll leave you with this video by the US Forest Service that sums up the situation pretty well, plus it starts out with a Black-backed Woodpecker nestling that is really cool.

Sadly, with a fins cut off (this video is very graphic, be warned), sharks are unable to navigate in the water. While there are laws in place protecting endangered species of shark from shark finning, international waters are rarely regulated when it comes to the practice.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. So we can squawk at the state wildlife departments all we want, but the USFWS has the final say.
