Hurting animals and repenting later.

Has anyone, as a child, ever hurt animals like pelting stray cats and dogs with stones? But now, I would give my life to protect them. As well, a part of me doesn’t want to be relieved of this burden, as I feel I’m undeserving of being freed from the emotional pain caused by my past actions. I used to do this when I was a kid.
