The American Humane Association Red Star team will be assisting the Joplin Humane Society, whose staff is not only grappling with the magnitude of the disaster but has personally suffered devastating losses from the tornado and needs time off to attend to their families and what may be left of their homes. Non-human beings have traditionally thought of on a basically immoral level…they lack any intrinsic values, are incapable of thoughts and emotions, and are only worth how good of a coat they make or how good they taste. I look forward to more research being done in this field. Science, for many years, has done no better.

Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. One of these colonies has now been opened to tourism after researchers studying the birds deemed visits by birders to be non-disruptive. And wow, what a trip we had!
