Skye wore a long-suffering expression, while Bau-Hien – whose parents had settled in Texas after leaving Vietnam – regarded me with a mixture of fascination and alarm. The mission of wildlife rehabilitators is to return injured birds to the sky, or the sea, or wherever it is they came from. Soon the girls emerged.

Even as a veteran wildlife rehabilitator, I could scarcely believe the sight before me. We all thought the kindest approach would be to end her suffering, but then…she raised her head and looked directly at me. We put her on the clinic’s exam table. An area on her abdomen the size and shape of a pie pan was open.

In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans.
