And then there was a Green Heron , not only showing us its nest, but also an egg. The reptiles in Parque Tomás Garrido were of the crocodilian variety. But this park’s flagship non-birds could be none other than the Coati, a tropical raccoon relative. And yet, there it was. But what could I do? I liked their attitude.

Getting out of line

By building nests out over the swamp, the birds benefit from the protection offered by the alligators in deterring predators such as raccoons and snakes. Boat-tailed Grackles count eggs and chicks as part of their diet and they were well represented here today.
