There are a lot of birds in Washington, DC. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History boasts an entire collection of skins of birds native to the DC area, from large Bald Eagles to tiny Eastern Screech Owls. In fact, the new exhibit is quite possibly the best I’ve ever seen, well worth the $100+ million price tag.

After three years of observation at a Bald Eagle nest in Washington state, I believe that young birds do, in fact, learn to fly — and they appear to learn much the same way we do. It really looked like a game of tag.
