When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. The only wildcat I found was illegally killed by hunters during closed season.

In a recent case involving my own facility, an immature bald eagle was hit by a car. People passed the eagle often. Inserts in rodent poisons that assure the public they will not kill anything but the offending rats or mice pedal the same questionable claims as those of the snake oil salesmen of bygone days.

At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! He has earned his tip.

However, there are still instances where individuals intentionally kill birds and there are criminal prosecutions under the MBTA, though they are uncommon. The case involved two men, Douglas “Vance” Crooked Arm and Kenneth Shane, and they were charged with baiting and killing eagles and hawks to make fans of tail feathers.
