Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! The closer one raises her head, than lies back.

Sundevall named Wahlberg’s Eagle and Wahlberg’s Honeyguide in his memory. He worked for Ezemvelo (the provincial parks authority) and was an avid bird bander who also worked on DNA analyses, radio tracking, monitoring endangered species nests etc. In 1964, Clancey’s “Birds of Natal and Zululand” raised the total to 590.

Raptors and other predatory birds have largely rebounded, and there seems to be be no shortage of Brown Pelicans, Peregrine Falcons and Bald Eagles. It’s important to take note that all of these species have benefited tremendously from being listed under the Endangered Species Act. That would have been awful.

Blue Cuckooshrike , a highly sought-after rainforest canopy species. .
