On our last visit to the grasslands of Manas we saw not one but two endangered Bengal Floricans in fifteen minutes, with a Pied Falconet thrown in for good measure! Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. We will travel on to the great Thar Desert, a place of immense beauty and peace.

Southern White-faced Scops Owl or African Scops Owl? Spotted Eagle Owls are one of several owls that can be seen here. As well as birds, the reserve holds endangered species like African Wild Dogs. You decide. Red-crested Korhaans are attractive members of the bustard family.

In Costa Rica, the growing local birding community likewise have their lists of most wanted species, both local and global. Bald Eagle. When I was a kid, I remember asking about the possibility of seeing a Bald Eagle around western New York. At least we have the Black-and-white Owl. I’ll start with some global ones.

A birder needs access to large areas of mature forest that also offer up chances at seeing glittering flocks of tanagers, checking out the tail bobbing behavior of cool antbirds, and glassing a hawk-eagle or two. Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. Blue Cuckooshrike , a highly sought-after rainforest canopy species. .

The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. But it’s a species I’ve tried for years to see in Britain and failed to, so of course I saw one finally at the extreme edge of it’s range in Ethiopia. United Arab Emirates: No Bird Award.
