In our early birding days, Erik and I had one of our most hilarious bird-related fights while looking at a flotilla of ducks in Mission Bay yelling at each other about field marks before realizing we were looking at two different ducks. This makes it a prime spot for bicycle-birding, our niche at the festival.

As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. The other two are motionless.

On entering the small village of Alkborough from either West Halton or Burton upon Stather you will see two brown signs on the church stone wall with a duck on, which indicate the area you need to head for. These reeds were an excellent place to observe Bearded Reedlings , though and a bird species that people come to the area to see.
