The day before, the day I arrived, was a transport day, and that meant the pack hadn’t been seen in the afternoon. And the morning before the Mkuze pack of Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, had been very close to one of the park’s few Lions, as far as tracking collars had told. Her concern was well founded.

Bird brought in by a cat or dog. Call and transport the bird to a bird rehabber ASAP. Even if you do not see an obvious wound, cat or dog saliva, which is full of nasty bacteria, can still get into a bird’s eyes/orifices and will eventually kill the bird; it will just die more slowly and painfully. *Emergency!

Tell me, what happens if we rip away hunting when hunting protects more wildlife land in Africa than national parks? There is a reason we talk about wildlife and habitat conservation, not wildlife and habitat preservation.

And of course, shuttling wildlife to and fro, and contemplating their place in our lives and our place in theirs. On a very quiet night during a lull in the drama of the ducks, I was researching the Greyhound racing industry, and seething over its treatment of dogs as well as the support it often gets, through subsidies, to help it survive.
