I read that if you scale up a mouse to human size and you look at body-lengths per second, they are moving at 152.6 They are not genetically so dissimilar to humans, sharing a lot of our genetic material. Note that neither dogs nor cats have hands, but both mice and rats do. I even met a feral racoon at like 3 or 4 am.

Do much birding in the city, and your thoughts will turn again and again to feral pigeons. As I have pointed out before , we owe the much-maligned sky rat a debt of gratitude. Human ingenuity has found a lot of uses for pigeons, though. Take the pigeon fancy, or fancy pigeons, however you want to word it.

Can we find a suitable island free from feral predators that would devastate the introduced species?

Humans, and the rats, pigs, goats, dogs, cats, snakes, mosquitos and disease they bring with them have wiped out species after species on islands. Tibbles did contribute, but it was a population of feral cats that did the bulk of the killing. The wren’s existence as known to humans was all too brief.
