Did the Black-bellied Whistling Duck represent his family, “showing face” as we say here in the Caribbean? Animals obviously see death and experience it as we do, so the question is not one of if, but of how. Elephants, peccaries, and corvids have all been documented processing the death of (as we put it) a loved one.

It also summarizes the vagrancy status of every bird family in the whole wide world, which makes it fun to read as well as superbly educational. The book is richly illustrated with contributions from a group of birders/photographers who were fortunate to see and document many of the vagrants covered. It’s not always easy reading.

Since the books share authors and a creation process, I thought I would review them together. It’s not clear how many of the plates have been touched up, redrawn or are new, and I hope we’ll learn more about the process, perhaps when the third book in the series by Howell and Dyer, a new guide to the birds of Mexico, is published.*

The authors make clear that the discovery, identification, and description of damselflies and dragonflies in Costa Rica is ongoing and in process and there are several species that have yet to be scientifically described and added to the official checklist. Wait–that adds up to 290 species, but the book only covers 283. .*
