Farmers were bragging about how much they "loved" the animals they would soon betray and slaughter, and many omnivores who had discovered how animals are treated wanted to assuage their consciences a bit by "at least" giving the animals a better life prior to their untimely slaughter. I recall one day when his sister-in-law was speaking with him about what she was feeding her children, and it wasn't a vegan-centered conversation. Ditto for "never," "always" and other such definitive words. Slaughter in moderation. Sometimes permanently. I think it was about hot dogs. really, Mary?) Rape in moderation.

The part that I definitely believe is laudable, and I can get behind, is in the final chapter: "Exploited to Extinction.". Corwin tells the story of the Maasai of Kenya, whose culture involved disdain for and slaughter of lions. But he constantly wonders where and when and how much we should intervene, which I suppose is laudable.

Meanwhile, I'm sure that writers whose style I have a problem with will say, "I don't have the time or the inclination to write the sort of dispassionate, tepid prose you prefer while tens of billions of sentient nonhumans are being enslaved and slaughtered for no good reason." And I understand that point.

The veracity of this statement hinges on Scott's definition of "inhumane," and that definition must be very, very restricted, and clearly unrelated to the realities of our modern factory farm system. All we do as vegans is take a reality--the reality of the sentience of cats, dogs, horses, chickens, sheep, cows, etc.
