For a land that can lay claim to an abundance of such wonderful native wildlife, it’s peculiar that the national symbolism of Scotland is so populated by mythological creatures. Swans swim on a small pond on the distillery grounds and deer and otters can be found by a trail that runs beside the burn.

Despite the eyesore that is this mine, the wildlife continues to thrive in this harsh environment. In addition to the hundred or so species of birds I regularly find here, there are Desert Foxes, Bobcats, Mountain Lions, Desert Bighorn Sheep and Mule Deer. Here are a few of the birds we spotted last weekend.

Growing up in central Oregon, allowed me to experience such a diverse amount of habitat, and the wildlife that resides there. Many refuges in this part of the state, like Malheur refuge, Summer Lake Refuge, and Tule lake Refuge all get the lion’s share of acclaim, and publicity, and deservedly so. I feel like I am home.

On that first trip, I even saw some of the last 500 (Asiatic) Lions ! monkeys, deer, gazelles, etc.). Most mammal guides aimed at wildlife watchers (and not scientists) tend to cover small and cryptic species as a group only, not going to a species level. I clearly needed a mammal book. Highly recommended. cm Weight 0.4

The Snow Geese at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge will soon be winging their way north, so he spent some quality time with them, his best birds of the weekend.
