A visit to Dog Lake

Mule Deer have always been pretty common in this area, but I got quite a surprise when I cleared a small hill in the road, and nearly ran over a male Pronghorn Antelope , right in the middle of the road. They don’t jump fences like deer do, usually finding a break, or low spot in the ground to dash under the fence material.

Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Imagine waking up to the call of thousands of ducks, geese, and every kind of marsh bird you can imagine. In addition to the birds, we saw Mule Deer, Beaver, Muskrat , and Mink. That is exactly where Week 30 in our Little Big Year adventure found us. Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge.

Winter Wanderland

Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. Next day, first stop – really to get some wins after the disappointment of the cancelled plans – was reliable Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR.

Roadside Birding and Flathead Lake

Mammals were mostly represented by Mule Deer and a handful of debatable Elk. Migrants, alas, were not yet much in evidence aside from the Canada Geese (mild climate my foot.) Sometimes a little too confiding, like the Wild Turkey that wandered out into the road in front of us and brought us to a stop for nearly a minute.
