Despite the fact that some 100,000 elk are shot every autumn in Sweden out of an estimated population of 3-400,000, King Gustaf believes that the presence of 200 wolves might spoil his annual hunt, so has been advocating the culling of as many wolves as possible. Yet to hunt the elk, he himself uses hunting dogs.

An animal rights group claims the dogs were killed inhumanely by an outdoor adventure company and thrown into a mass grave. Local media reports say business slumped after the 2010 Winter Olympics and the dogs were no longer needed. The company could not be reached for comment.

I can’t even imagine being in a position where my government was telling me to kill my dog, or have it beaten to death. Dog owners in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, are even being told to kill their own dogs, or else their dogs will be beaten to death by the police and the owners will be charged a fine.

And because they are lions they don’t like other large predators, and so now there are less hyenas and leopards and the African Wild Dogs only hunt in a few areas not favoured by the lions. And culls of Nyala have been proposed. So now there are lots of lions, and they like buffalo, so now there are less buffalo.

You may have seen "Dog," posted by Stephanie. When I saw " From Science, Plenty of Cows but Little Profit " this morning in the New York Times , I immediately thought of "Dog." Since January the program has culled about 230,000 cows nationwide." We here in America claim we love dogs. If not, here it is.
