I don’t see many long-term benefits to a landscape where large areas have been converted to monocultures of banana, pineapples (real eco-deserts full of poison), and cow, but it’s at least worthwhile to know that such habitats are pretty worthless for birding. The Scarlet Tanagers in fall have shed their scarlet appearance.

I sample birding on Poas more often than at other sites in Costa Rica because it’s close to home and makes for a worthwhile guided day trip from the San Jose area. The cotingas are missing because the forests they used to migrate to at lower elevations have been gone for some time, replaced by pasture for cows.

Easy, Bonus Birding at Cano Negro, Costa Rica

From San Jose, it takes four to four and a half hours but given the excellent birding opps on the way, you might want to allocate a bit more time. But, you won’t find any dairy cows at Medio Queso. From the Arenal area, it’s a pretty quick hour and a half deal up to Los Chiles.
