Let's deconstruct: The heading is: "Okay, so your steak comes from a cow that lived a happy life--but how did that life end?" It's a cow who--who--lived an allegedly happy life. And perhaps that "better" will distract the reader from the undeniable fact of the unjust slaughter. The needs of the cow aren't even mentioned.

It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. Why choose enslavement, rape, domination and slaughter? So we went from a ban to a vague statement about the prevention of abuse that clearly doesn't consider slaughter abusive. Or if it's brutal it is necessary.

He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. You are not processing their wellbeing, but their carcasses for meat. Here is my opinion.

Nor could he object to meat-eating if the slaughter were completely painless and the raising of animals at least as comfortable as life in the wild. Such a vegetarian will, however, object to the drinking of milk, since the production of milk requires a painful separation between cow and calf.

To the Editor: Re “ PETA’s Latest Tactic: $1 Million for Fake Meat ” (news article, April 21): The commercial development of meat from animal tissue won’t result in “fake meat” any more than cloning sheep results in fake sheep. A more accurate name for the end result would therefore be “clean meat.”
