However, in this post, I’d like to lay out the basic numbers as we pretend to know them about overall bird mortality, human related causes of mortality, and somewhere in there I’ll note that the number of birds that are killed by windmills is so small that it says “zero” on my pie chart. So keep that in mind.

Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. They believe you can take a life that doesn't want to be taken in a humane way, and I don't agree. The voice of Temple Grandin is of course the foundation. It’s how we treat humans, too. Potent if symbolic?

This last implies of course an improvement in ethics, as opposed to morality, as I have defined it, unless we already understand 'Do as you would be done by' as applicable to whales, cattle, chickens, and so on, as it is to human beings. I am myself not so heroic. I eat eggs though they may come from battery hens.

Not in words, of course, but they can answer in ways that we can understand if we are paying attention. That system may treat sentient animals like car parts, ruin antibiotics we need for human medicine, and destroy rural communities by polluting our air and water, but at least it’s “efficient” (a word Mr. Hurst hammers three times).

When I started blogging, I thought that if more people sought out free-range, grass-fed "beef," more animals would be saved/fewer would be created. The question of course is, are you really significantly decreasing suffering? Films, blogs, books, e-zines, sanctuaries, protests, promotion of adoption (of humans and nonhumans!).

This would be a night drive, cold, dark, uncomfortable seats, loud engine in the giant 26-seater truck, scanning the brush and the roadside with three or four strong spotlights wrangled by volunteers among the nature-loving tourists, and of course, the headlights of the truck. And, of course, something interesting came along.

It is now believed to have been a fairly common resident of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands until the arrival of the first humans when it went the way of most flightless easy to catch island birds immediately after the arrival of man. … Extinction is forever. A species, wiped off the earth, never to exist again. What a horror!
