Even so, in the short term, it can be hard to accept that hundreds of species are close to being extinguished from this irreplaceble tapestry of life, that hundreds more are headed for the same eventual abysmal stop. We would see how species that used to be common, even abundant, became remnants of their former, robust populations.

Costa Rica is a tropical country but it doesn’t have to be hot. This is common with life-threatening situations and expected; any ancient ancestors who would have not paid heed to close calls would have likely been quickly and savagely selected from the gene pool (just trying to pet the Short-faced Bear again…).

Birdmania at the Cano Negro Bird Count, Costa Rica

I spent two full days where the birding was near constant, and, just to keep the binoculars from being neglected, topped it off with another half day of birding on our drive back from Cano Negro, Costa Rica. One of those species was a Pied Puffbird , our sole individual for the day and maybe the only one for the count.

Rather, it originates from the white-hot evil fire that is the soul of an invasive, alien species hell-bent on destruction and mayhem. Very stupid thing to do. We love them anyway.

(I Entry with your pet is forbidden: no dogs; they scare wildlife. A hand-painted sign told not to enter with a dog. It was really very early.
