On "Compassion," "Nonviolence" and "Justice"

Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Compassion" has been so diluted that most people don't bat an eyelash at the idea of " compassionate carnivores." Because I've been thinking about the evolution of my own thinking--and languaging--regarding animal rights.

Or how a paragraph would refer to animal rights and animal welfare as if they're interchangeable. Fighting to maintain the integrity of the words humane, love, euthanasia or compassion, is also fighting for animals. would call HSUS an animal rights group (after all, HSUS doesn't even do that).

And that means for the animal rights movement: Social entities like compassion, empathy and suffering are very important factors to motivate humans to change their behaviour. Though I don't think I've ever used the term personhood with a non-attorney, I don't see what's so negative about referring to rights.
